Got an email from Somnium. While they would not disclose the degree of canting, they did acknowledge there is some canting. Heres what they said…
"Thank you for your question and for ordering the Visionary headset!
To address your inquiry, the screens in the Visionary are indeed very slightly canted, but we do not provide the exact angle. That said, you need not worry about this detail. The primary technology enabling our impressive 130-degree real horizontal field of view is our unique double-stacked aspherical lens system per eye. This is a highly innovative approach that sets our headset apart.
Additionally, our software offers exceptional customization options for warping profiles and image adjustments. This ensures you can tailor the visual experience to your preferences, allowing for optimal comfort and satisfaction.
If you have any further concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re confident you’ll enjoy the unparalleled experience the Visionary headset delivers."
Of course they said “you need not worry about this detail”. Im really hoping that it doesnt cause eye strain for me.
They also stated the software has customization options. Just like PImax and XTAL had the panel offset options, I wonder if this is what they are referring to I guess we will see.
Ill let you know when I have a chance to play with it. Ill know pretty quickly. It was apparent with the XTAL after about 5 or 10 minutes of use…
They say “The primary technology enabling our impressive 130-degree real horizontal field of view is our unique double-stacked aspherical lens system per eye” This is making me wonder if Pimax and XTAL were able to get the wide FOV with the use of canting. Maybe just maybe since Somnium does not have a wide 160 FOV, then they didnt need to cant as much and are relying on their lens tech to accomplish the 130 FOV??
The Pimax P2 series had wider lenses, I always thought that was playing a part in the wider FOV too.
I could never put my finger on why the OG Vive had much better “3D” effect than the Pimax P2 HMD’s. Is this the outcome of a better binocular overlap. I saw info that on the “HMD Geometry Database” you posted.
Did risa2000 order the Classic? From my understanding all the VR1 HMD’s have the 130 FOV. However I cant seem to pull up each individual Headset on the website. And for some reason its still showing the Classic which has been discontinued. Im wondering if I just cant figure out the website layout becasue a week ago it did not list the Classic on the website. Hmmm
The lenses are needed as well. With the display panels being so wide they need to be csnted otherwise the screens become further from the eyes as well.
I imagine with the “InfiniRye” using stacked off the shelf Aspherical lenses may have had better balanced with keeping magnification more consistent maybe across the displays. But likely would have made the headset even bigger/thicker off the face.
Well the larger the FoV eventually there is less 3D overlap as one eye is less likely to see the entirety of the opposite eye’s total FoV. I would surmise especially since day the Left eye is not able to even see fully towards the right like the right as there is not enough screen to do so
This is where maybe having a 3D display could work with no.dividers as the polarized lenses would allow each eye to only see the perspective of the given eye for as far as it could see on the screen on the opposite eye’s side.
With smaller FoV headsets there is less screen realistste and often more % of overlap as a result.
I am not sure if Risa has order much in VR headsets, on OpenMR Rain374(If I have full name right) has been raving up the VR1 since he received theirs.
Atmos recently posted a RoadToVR article on the pricing update for the VR1. It didn’t show the classic in the article. If you click on that tag you should also find the article here as well in XR News Feeds category.
I do not order VR headsets anymore - sold my Quest, OG Vive and Pimax 5k+ long time ago. For some “quick and dirty” VR I still keep Vive Pro, but mostly for sw testing and what not.
One (but not the only) reason being that most of the new headsets do not support my IPD of 72 mm or do not accommodate glasses (which are similarly large) and do not sport prescription inserts. So I am kind of stuck with Vive Pro where I can still use inserts.
The data in database are usually coming from supporters, who send me the recorded file (as explained on the website).
Concerning the data for XTAL or Somnium VR-1, these two headsets can be set to an arbitrary FOV by user, so recording it into a database does not make much sense, because users can set whatever they want - or what would be the maximum value the runtime allows, regardless whether it would make sense or not technically.
Sorry about your woes with glasses, that has to narrow the field when choosing headsets. However the Vive Pro with the better lenses is still a great experience.
I didnt realize the VR1 allowed change of FOV on the fly. Is this new information, I thought I was keeping up with the production and design but maybe I missed that?
I dont remember my XTAL 5K or 8K model having that option either but maybe thats on the newer models
Hi Risa, good to see you… sorry to hear about the VR restrictions.
Being able to set the FoV reported to the runtime sounds a bit sneaky. So I am guessing in these cases Testhmd and similar programs become more the go to for getting an idea of legit FoV values.
In the right side bar bottom you can change theme. If you like Dark themes - Ghost might be to your liking.
It would be interesting to see if Praydog’s UEVR would work on ‘The vanishing of Ethan Carter’ that game is really detailed. The VR version is partially broken and Astronauts is very unlikely to fix. Do the Redux flat game might be quite awesome if it works with UEVR Mod
I remember when I first got intoVR, back in the good ol Pimax 4K days, Somebody recommended The Solus Project, and then at the same time I think it was you that recommended The vanishing of Ethan Carter. I started The Vanishing for a bit quickly got pulled into The Solarus Project. I might need to go back to The Vanishing of EC and give it another try
Didn’t get too directly involved in game play. But did wonder around aimlessly. Nature’s Trek also looked like it might be cool but never checked it out.
stumbled over this thread…
I do understand those arguments, especially the platform requirements, where we need to have a 5090 at minimum for a reasonable bionic headset.
But I disagree still, if users would face a PIMAX 8KX based on CRYSTAL ergonomics and a better MR camera integration with separate USBC path it would be a burner together with a RTX 5090. … for consumers.
a thought, just my 2 cents…
This is also where the Crystal Super looks interesting and may fit the gap nicely with either the 57ppd @120ish wide(confirmed at CES) and potentially the 50ppd @135 wide(not validated as not demoed at CES)
The improved smaller form factor with the modular optic engine upgrade path is really promising

I guess I was not clear with my wording. 120° HFoV is rubbish for me.
I would gladly take all ergonomics of crystal (auto IPD, potentially diopter adjustment to not need glasses while wearing the headset balanced headstrap …
But with 8KX Field of view, meaning 160° HFoV or better.
Because NOTHING on consumer level exists today that has such FoV you can buy.
Hopefully my 8KX remains for another 5 years, until finally …12KX maybe…
Well I can see the draw if the 12k for the potential of the FoV. With the 8kX were you using Large? As I know most even myself usually just used Normal @14° Wide. Maybe if the Super 50pod @135° Wide might be a decent filler. From normal that would -2.5° per side.
But if you’re using Large and prefer it. I can appreciate why the Super even with the 135° Wide. Simply wouldn’t cut it as an upgrade.
I ONLY use large mode, why should I reduce FoV if I paid for it?
Because of this I have my RTX4090 bought for, watercooled, custom loop of course.
I will not go down with FoV, only go up. I am up for a “bionic view”, resolution of 8KX accecptable so far, of course, if better with same or better resolution, I would take it.
