Luke Ross’s Cyberpunk 2077 seems like a great VR mod. THe only issue I have is that I get a little eye strain. I think I just need to adjust the eye stereo or some IPD adjustment in his software. Other wise the game runs at around 60fps on mostly medium settings with the 4080Super GPU

I just downloaded the newest drivers for my 4080S. I think its supposed to have some DLSS stuff built in order to take advantage of newer DLSS options?? Not entirely sure.

On another note, Half Life 2 VR is available for free on Steam if you already have the original flat screen version, so is Episode 1 and 2. Im playing Half Life 2 in VR right now and its pretty impressive.

Couldn’t help my eye catching on what Pimax wrote about DLSS frame generation in their marketing letter the other day… I find it hard to believe they really make games use it, as they suggest.

Well imagine pimax is just piggy backing off Nvidia. So the DLSS support will be related to Nvidia’s efforts & cooperation. Similar to the FFR. Have to watch for videos reviewing these features roll out. As many of the new features like DLSS v4(?) is also coming to at least the 40series cards. Meaning all the benches showing 59 gains over 40 will need to be redone.

I remember Hubris which is a 2022 game and it had the DLSS option, it actually works pretty good, you can boost graphics and not take a fps hit. I was not using the latest Nvidia drivers but that was an older version of DLSS

“DLSS upscaling” simply refers to rendering a game at a lower resolution and then using AI to upscale it to a higher resolution, while “DLSS frame generation” goes further by using AI to generate entirely new frames between existing ones"

SO from what I remember in Hubris…I had a “set” resolution and had a known good image quality on the headset, now this higher resolution and image quality was causing my fps to drop, so as soon as I enabled the game’s DLSS option (whatever style that is, it didnt say in the game), this would give me 20 or 30 fps back but kept the same resloution(or image quality).

So Im assuming it was DLSS Frame regeneration?

I don’t know about the features of Hubris, but I’d risk a guess that: Probably not; Upscaling kicks render resolution down a bit, and then upscales the resulting image to the originally requested resolution using newer “smarter” algorithms than just resampling the image - this gives you frames per second back for the simple reason the game doesn’t render at the higher requested resolution. Some people are more accepting than others, of imperfections in such an upscaled frame, compared to a real actually full-scale rendered frame, than other people…

Frame generation would be to skip rendering a frame altogether, and approximate an ersatz one in its place, from the last one rendered, depending on how things are moving around – essentially the same thing as what we have long had in VR runtimes, under monickers such as Asynchronous Space Warp, or Motion Smoothing, or one aspect of Reprojection, but with some key differences.

The problem is that both all but the oldest versions of DLSS or FSR upscaling, and DLSS/FSR frame generation, absolutely require motion vector data from the game, in order to know how to pick image detail from existing frames (“this pixel seems to be moving in that direction, this quickly, so it should be about… here right now”), and I utterly fail to see how Pimax’s software could conjure this out of thin air, for a game that does not provide it. -Now, it could derive a vector map analytically, using the same frame-comparing algorithms as video compression, same as done by reprojection, but that is much less accurate and precise than what the game can produce, given it can keep track of how it animates things on-screen, for the purpose.

Other than the machine learning aspect; What sets “our” motion smoothing and DLSS frame generation apart, is that the former takes the last frame and extrapolates a new future one, depending on how things appear to have moved between that old frame and the one it itself was preceeded by, plus a prediction of how your head seems to be turning; Whereas the latter does a longer prediction of how things are likely to move, for the purpose of rendering a full frame ahead of time, so that it can interpolate between the last frame and this future one. That latter approach should produce better looking pictures, but the longer prediction, plus the time required to render the future frame, means there is much more time between actual things moving, and them finally being shown on screen - latency, which can manifest in a longer lag between your turning your head, and your view reacting accordingly, as well as giving a lot more room for inaccurate predictions to pile up; It is for this reason generally thought unviable for VR use…

On the other hand, there is one guy with a Pimax Crystal on the Elite Dangerous forums, who swears blind that he plays the game (…which provides no motion data - does not even have TAA) , at full resolution, with maxed out settings, and no frame drops, claiming he is well familiar what reprojection looks like and sees nothing of the sort… Whilst I loathe to doubt the man’s sincerity, I still just can not take his word on this – extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I have come across quite a lot of people over the years, who have made similar claims, who have turned out to (or so claiming) see no difference between 90fps, and 45+reprojection, even while that same 45+reprojection is brain-scramblingly horrible to my own particular sensibilities. :stuck_out_tongue:

I wouldn’t mind playing Red Dead Redemption 2 in VR. I used to have the UE VR injector app but I recently upgraded my PC. I might have to look into that again
