Big deal OpenVR Space Calibrator patched for Crystal!
Guus_ report from Pimax Discord
And it does work perfectly !
Guus_ How-to:
2 lighthouses, index controllers, headset and tundra dongle
I just connected the tundra usb dongle, then I turned the Crystal, light houses and index controllers all on and then I calibrated
you need to hold one index controller on top of the Crystal and move it around
then itās done

I received my Pimax Crystal yesterday! After a bit of mucking around to get the thing to connect, I booted up a few of my usual VR games (Including SkyrimVR). Wow. The visual clarity is absolutely stunning. Itās a bigger improvement than going from the original Vive to the Valve Index.
After playing for half an hour, I took off the headset, updated the firmware, and went to work. When I got back I turned the headset back on, only to discover that there was now a flickering horizontal line across the right eye of the headset.
I reached out to support, who (I think?) advised that the firmware update prevents this issue from occurring, but does not fix it once it has. They suggested that I leave the headset unplugged / depowered for two days to correct the issue. Hopefully this fixes it, and I donāt end up having to send it back. Iāll update this post in a few days with the outcome.
Update: After waiting the two days, the flickering line is gone! Thanks for the quick support on this, Pimax!

Hello! Iāve finally got all of the issues worked out with the crystal. Image is completely stable when moving around, etc. One issue remains, however, which I havenāt had luck troubleshooting.
The tracking on the controllers is quite bad. If I set my hand on an object to brace it a moderate distance in front of me and point at something, the laser pointer moves a pretty large amount as the controller jitters. This is particularly bad when aiming down the sights at something. This makes it quite difficult to use any sort of ranged weaponry in VR.
Has anyone else encountered this? Any known fixes?

Hey folks. I got my crystal 22 days ago, on June 12th. This post is intended to share my experiences with the headset so far.
To summarize: The visuals are amazing. Theyāre far, far superior to my old headset (an Index). In SkyrimVR, I can clearly see faces, and recognize details that were impossible to see at distance before. Even trying to look for it, itās impossible to perceive any sort of screen-door effect. The darks are very dark (But thereās a bit of blooming in the pitch black). You can mitigate this by adjusting the intensity of the local dimming in the pimax device settings though; Iām playing with Highlight at the moment (Default is Extreme). The weight of the headset also doesnāt really bother me, exclusively playing non-seated games.
Over the past 3 weeks of ownership, I encountered the following issues.
My first experience with the headset was an issue with the lcd screen almost immediately after using it. To Pimaxās credit, their support was quite helpful here.
( Immediately following that, the headset had significant visual glitches until 1.12 was released, improving 4090 support. The image had a lot of artifacts and issues prior to this. 1.12 did come out pretty early though, so this wasnāt a blocker for too long.
At this point weāre 1 week into headset ownership. Booted up a game and attempted to play, only to discover that the crystalās controller tracking is awful. Like, āI have some sort of neurodegenerative condition and canāt control my movementsā bad. This still isnāt resolved as of writing this post (Though the beta testers have said an upcoming version of firmware does improve this considerably).
Fast forward a bit, and Dextro patched the OpenVR Space Calibrator to be compatible with the crystal. So as of this morning, I now have perfect tracking using my index knuckles, with the amazing visuals of the crystal. At last, weāve arrived at the VR experience I was hoping to get out of this headset, after 22 days of ownership.
Overall very happy with the headset, but less happy with Pimax. They knowingly shipped a defective product, despite members of the team advising that they should wait. They also missed their estimate as to when the controllers would be fixed several times (Still not fixed as of this post).
The visuals on the headset are outstanding, but you should consider that itās basically mandatory to buy watchman dongles + base stations + different controllers + a tracker to actually use the headset for usecases that require controllers. I already had all of these except for the dongles, but it could be a pretty significant increase in cost for those that donāt.
EDIT: Oh, also - I bought a set of vr-rock lens inserts for the headset, which work great! Glasses donāt work well with this headset as the lenses are so close to your eyes. The inserts solve this problem nicely, though my eyelashes do touch them a bit.
EDIT2: One additional observation, is that the Space Calibrator also fixes the floor height bug. When continuous calibration is on, the floor height for the headset is calibrated to the tracker, which does not lose the height.

I was super excited to get this headset. I only wanted it to play Asetto and have super clean graphics.I was using quest 2 with a 3080ti and i9 13900k. On oculus 2 I was doing an x1.5 resolution and made the picture so much nicer. I was still getting like 90fps and when I saw the crystalās native resolution was basically the same as the oculus 2ās x1.5 overdriven resolution I figured I would get the same performance with much nicer and cleaner graphics. Headset came in and the setup was super easy but I realized how freaking uncomfortable this headset is. I messed around for hours and in the end, it was still not good. ( yes I was using the thicker and bigger facepad)Another thing that was bothering me a lot is the CRAZY amount of chromatic aberration. Blue/ red and green around so many damn things. Then I tried to play the game and first, it did look good but the performance sucked. I checked steamvr settings and realized I was also doing the oversample thing on the crystal. It was also at %150. When I put it to %100 the game looked more like what I had on Quest 2 without the ugly fresnel lens look. Like in the car, the text on the odometer was just as blurry. Btw the whole time I was struggling with having the vr stay at the right place on my face. It kept drooping down pushing on my eyebrows and cheeks. Kept adjusting it every 5 minutes :(Auto IPD does not work and I kept switching between the smallest and widest IPD and barely had any difference while quest 2ās smallest and widest settings made a huge difference. On quest 2 it was super easy to find the right ipd. With Crystal, I have tried half a dozen scenarios to adjust and find the right IPD and I was simply unable to do so. ( Like watching still images. watching a video. Looking at the text, looking at different games, dark / bright places nothing really made the image better or worse.I know I could get better performance if I spent just as much again on a 4090 but it doesnāt help with the other issues.FOV was also not much better than quest 2. Imho the best thing about the headset is not having a fresnel lens and because of that, the image is clearer. So thinking about returning it and waiting for the quest 3 or maybe getting the quest proā¦Forgot to mention I realized I can not use a normal audio headset with this. Bummer.
Update:The head strap is not broken. If i set it tighter, it holds better, but the back end (where the battery is) behind my head wonāt be able to swing down far enough. I was messing with the ipd a ton. I was even trying to adjust it while I was looking at the chromatic aberration to see if it goes away. Btw lenses do move. I can hear the motor, and when reaching the smallest amount, I could tell it was getting closer to my nose. So there was a point where, in the very middle, I was getting less fringing, but I was still getting it all around. For example, if I opened the Steam menu, I saw red all around it. Kdmas speaker does work. I play with people around me. I want to use my headset so I donāt bother anyone. I already have a nice audio headset and can not stand using an earpiece (plug style), so I wonāt do that. Buying a 4090 is not exactly the answer. Even if I was able to get enough performance out of my pc, I would still be like 50-50 about the headset. Just not enough to justify spending $1600. Like, right now, I am 80-20 about sending it back or selling it.Also the steam vr rarely comes up even tho i am pressing the button. Annoying as hell.
UPDATE#2: I am warming up to it! color fringing still sux. Comfort was not good but I put a kitchen towel folded 10 times in between the elastic and the rubber rigid head strip and it helped tremendously. Clarity is there for sure! %130 render resolution was playable in asetto. But both days i had issue where the screen was shutting off randomly. It wasnāt the battery. But I had a couple super fun hours with it. Then changed the battery and the issues started after

So I had a rather disappointing first day with the Crystal.
Short recap
So day 2 came I had a few hours of play time and itās definitely growing on me and starting to like it.
⢠First of all, I realized even my oculus 2 has color fringing but itās not as visible due to the lower resolution panel and the fresnel lens.
⢠Comfort wise I took a small towel and folded it up like 10 times and stick it between the elastic and rubber head strap on the top of my head and it did relieve some pressure that the headset was putting on my forehead and cheeks. ( adjusting the elastic strap tighter made things worse since the back end of the headset just couldnāt swing low enough behind my head. ) After this towel trick I was able to play 2 hours without an issue.
⢠I do need a better graphics card so I can hit 90fps in game. I have a 3080Ti and 50-60fps feels choppy. Whenever fps goes up to 75+ it becomes smooth
I use vrperfkit and foveated rendering. Opencomposite and openxr make the game unplayably choppy and stuttery.
I set the render resolution to %130 and it does look really nice and clear.
I tried to take some through the lens images of the crystal and oculus 2 to compare them. Not sure what would be the best way to show them so here are some links:

TLDR: If I had to score this headset I would give it 2 out of 5. :(( Yes I got the latest update)
Positive(s?): Clarity
Yeah. Canāt think of anything else thatās good on this headset. While I have no major issues that are preventing me from using it I still have a bunch of issues that wanna make me return it. Especially since It costs this much.
Cons:( from previous posts that are still not changed)
New issues since my day 2 update:
-Very bad brightness and color calibration issues between the 2 panels (eyes)
Discord link if you wanna know more about it
-Left trigger is bad. B button is bad. ( so both controllers need to be replaced. They do work. But they have issues and again; for a $1600 headset I donāt want any issues at all.
-Got the new update for the controllers but games are unplayable since controllers stick in the air every other minute for 5 seconds.
-Other dozen quirky or stupid issues that came up since I had it but there are workarounds and or fixable after you freak out about them.
There you have It. Want my honesT opinion? Well. I donāt think I wanna Say it since I would like pimax to Actually help me with my iSS ue and if I say it how I feel I donāt think they would talk to me.

I pre ordered my Crystal the first week in December. Iāve been using a Quest 2 for about 3 years now. My roommate has a G2 and Iāve used the Aero and G2 fairly extensively at work. Now that Iāve introduced myself⦠hereās my experience!
Got the payment email and paid June 7. Address verification on the 15th. We had a little confusion. I ended up having $100 off, but not from a previous unit. It was the combo of the pre order, shipping, and discount code. Got that sorted and it shipped on the 28th. It showed up in Texas 4 days after shipping from China!
Unboxed it and set it up today after getting back from a long weekend. Iāve used the Oculus runtime until now, so I got OpenXR all set up. Updated HMD and controllers without an issue. Launched DCS with the same settings I used for the Quest 2 and made some very minor tweaks (capped FPS at 40 and set the settings from the Pimax support page for OpenXR setup). Main goal here was to see how much I needed to overhaul my settings.
After perusing the Pimax Discord and this sub for the past 7 months my expectations were very low for ease of setup and initial use. Maybe itās the new firmware/software that magically made this process easy, but⦠thatās the easiest setup and launch Iāve seen in any headset Iāve used. It all just worked. The IPD adjustment screen is a little annoying and sometimes gets stuck and requires a screen off/on click, but that might be me.
As far as in game experience goes, same smoothness Iām used to while running my Quest at high settings. Again, I mirrored Pimaxās recommended settings, resolution scale at 75% being the most notable. Frame rate uncapped is a different story, so I capped it at 40, which is more than enough for flight sim use.
Quick setup and launch. Great plug and play upgrade use from my Quest 2. The fit on my head is going to take a little getting used to and I have a little eye soreness after the fact. The Aero gives me the same feeling. I use 68mm IPD so I donāt think itās an IPD issue. Maybe itās just an adjustment thing for my eyes. If anybody has any ideas, Iām interested in what you think could be causing the headache. I spend like 20 hours a week in VR and have only had this feeling with the Aero and now the Crystal. Iāll adjust to it. I digress.
Definitely happy with my purchase and canāt wait for continued feature rollouts!! Now itās time to tweak my settings until I inevitably ruin everything and revert back to today.

Hi Everyone, Got my Crystal last night, only had a short time with it but wanted to give my first impressions and hopefully get some advice on a few things. PS. Iām using a 7800X3D / 4090 PC.
The first hiccup was when i plugged it all in. The Pimax software wants recognizing the headset at all. I looked online and read to bypass the usb hub and go directly into the PC. It then works instantly when i did this ( obviously not the best result as i want to use the hub to extend the battery life ) Updated the headset and then i was pretty much ready to go so i launched Steam VR.
The headset is well balanced but it feels like it needs side pads ( might have to buy the Studioform Creative Apache Strap as recommended by @Omniwhatever to help with this ) as it feels like all the pressure is on the front and back of my head and no relief anywhere else ( even the top head strap ). I am certain that the headset is on correctly but it still feels like the front of it wobbles if i move my head side to side. The FOV was a bit less than i thought it would be. Its bigger than the G2 but wasnāt substantially different.
In steam vr my head was in the floor. I did do the room setup on the pimax software but it seemed useless. My work around which i read online was to download OVR advance settings and it was quick to adjust the floor height.
First game i tried was Aircar ⦠my goodness the screen incredible. The clarity and colours are as good as youāve heard. For some reason the thumb sticks on the controller werenāt working but i was just so blown away by how it looks that iāll worry about fixing that when i get more time. Next i launched Kayak Mirage. Wow⦠just wow. I looked incredible and the tracking seemed to be working with no issues.
I tried some other quick experiences ( so my kids could try it at the weekend ) with no luck ⦠TheBlu just didnāt launch. Came up on the monitor but in the headset it still said āup nextā in steam vr and never changed. Invasion never launched but that might be an unreal issue.
That was all the time i had ⦠Feel free to ask me any questions but wondering it anyone could advise me on some issues that might make things a bit easier next time i give it a go.
- My main gripe was my Steam VR Library. If iām in the headset and exit a game, iāll bring up my library on the steam vr menu. Any time i click ābrowse allā at the top right it crashes the menu. i can still move my head and controllers around but the steam vr menu doesnāt allow me to click anything. I tried this 5 times and it froze the steam vr menu every time. Any ideas?
- This might be a steam vr issue but it never happened with the G2. OVR advanced settings fpsVR arenāt automatically appearing at the bottom of the steam vr menu screen. It only appears on the bar if i launch them through steam desktop. Shouldnāt they appear there automatically?
- There is a Red tint / hue around everything in steam vr home, especially the edges of the menu box and the controller. Cant really notice it in game but obviously i would want this resolved.
Thanks
Olly

Got it a week ago, after much frustration about the slow shipping after payment and what I think was misleading communication about that process. However, I agree with everyoneās praise about the screen/glass lenses.
My two āwoah dudeā moments were (1) flying over Tokyo at sunrise and seeing all the tiny reflections on the buildings/houses from a few thousand feet; and (2) SkyrimVR with the minimalistic overhaul wabbajack, walking around Whiterun.
It finally feels like the screen is really out of the way. On both games Iāve always been a little frustrated by resolution and glare (on my Index) that kind-of made things seem a little smeared. On the Crystal, itās like looking through a window.
I do have one dead and one stuck pixel, but Iāve started the process with Pimax support about that, which I hope will be smooth. Also, I got the head strap and the thick face cushion recommended by @Omniwhatever, which make a huge difference for me in comfort. Also, the whole changing the page file every time you make adjustments in settings bug is absurd.
But, despite the shenanigans with problematic logistics/communication, and unmet timelines on DFR, itās nice to see Pimax engage so pro-actively on this subreddit. There are kind of two experiences Iāve had, on one hand being frustrated with the global communication, on the other hand feeling like Pimax is very responsive when engaging directly.
Itās sort of odd how Pimax hits home runs on some of the stuff that other companies struggle with, like the screens/lenses and making individual customers feel heard, but then totally fumbles on the stuff that should be easy, like the little settings bug, and polishing up their general communication/managing expectations about timelines.
Anyway, just felt like chiming in since it seems like a lot of folks are getting their Crystals and posting initial impressions.

J> ust thought Iād give my two cents since I hadnāt seen many reviews on it so far :
For background, Iāve had a good number of vr headsets over the years - dk2, CV1, rift s, vive, odyssey, odyssey plus, original hp, original reverb, reverb g2, valve index, focus 3, quest 1/2/pro, psvr1/2, vive cosmos, pimax 5k/8k/8k x, varjo xr3 among others. I have a 4090 with 7700x so your mileage may vary if you try to run on a lower specced system.
Despite a rocky start with pimax initially sending me inferior lenses and without the usb hub, I now have both and the picture quality is now glorious. I can safely say the picture quality is overall better than any vr headset Iāve had. Visually thereās almost no nitpicks I normally have with any other headset⦠no mura, no god rays, almost no distortion, perfect colors, good enough blacks that I donāt even miss OLED, no sde. FOV could be a bit higher but theyāre working on bigger fov lenses and even now itās around pico/quest pro level so not bad.
I keep getting wowed like I did when I first started using vrā¦native vr games like half life alyx, lone echo 2, star wars squadrons simply look stunning. The character models on lone echo 2 and squadrons are so incredibly detailed it feels like Iām looking at a real creature or person sometimes.
While I will certainly enjoy replaying games like alyx and lone echo 2 and finishing squadrons, there really havenāt been many AAA vr games that have come out lately. Thatās where the vr mods come in. Games like jedi fallen order, sackboy, horizon zero dawn, hogwarts legacy, the resident evil games and returnal look amazing and I finally donāt feel like Iām losing out on detail compared to playing them on a 4k tv/monitor.
Now Pimax being Pimax there are of course downsides. First of all, the crystal isnāt feature complete. The eye tracking, aio, wireless 6e, and wireless 60ghz have all been promised, and the hardware is there for all but the 60ghz wireless, but none of itās enabled yet. Which is a real shame as I really would like to just sell all my other headsets at this point but still would like a wireless set as I often play in a larger play space away from my computer and also play games like population one that really benefit from not having a wire. The size and weight is also an issue, though not as big of an issue as I thought once I swapped the facial interface for a cushier type that I had from the Odyssey plus. Overall Iād say itās better comfort than the psvr2 for me but still slightly worse than the quest pro with a top strap. The other thing that needs to be fixed is the controller tracking. The volume isnāt horrible, but even with a recent update to improve tracking, I get jitter and tracking loss sometimes, especially when close to the headset. Also, the width of the headset interferes with archery type games.
Let me know if you have any questions as this was just a quick writeup from my phone. Overall Iām excited about using the headset and am really hoping for improvements to tracking and the enablement of even some form of wireless vr. Initially I was ready to return it with the plastic lenses they shipped it with but now it just looks so good that Iād rather sell everything else to keep it, even if that means waiting for wireless.

I was very looking forward to the Crystal and am close to my return window so I need to make a decision: stick, or return it. Kinda on the fence. Thereās a lot to like, the panels are great, the sound is good, and itās fairly comfortable once you get it adjusted (despite the weight). The upcoming features like foveated rendering look great.
The downsides are flakiness in terms of needing to reboot/ replies to get it recognized by the Pimax software, and mainly the lenses. I donāt know if I just got a bad set, and I am pretty sure they are glass, but there is just a lot of color fringing / chromatic aberration outside of the very center of the fov, straight on front. And itās super distracting because even if you are looking at something towards the center, the further off-axis eye behind picking up the CA and detracting from clarity. ( which, apart from CA would be really good)
Easiest way to see this is open up the openxr toolkit gui, and look at it straight on, one eye at a time. I see the fringe of colors alternate on the border of the toolkit window depending on the eye.
For games like HL Alyx not dad noticeable but got things like flight sims with cockpits and instruments but us not great. Shows up as a green double image on text when looking at anything not straight in front of you in the center of the fov.
I previously had a Varjo Aero which also had aspheric lenses but did not have this problem. Is it just me or is this endemic to Crystal headsets? Maybe the rumored new wife FoV lenses will be better but I donāt wanna gamble with 1700 bucks, the problem is such that despite the positives I fired up my pico 4 and preferred the image, although much softer and less sharp, no super distracting CA

Initial Impressions:
Just got my Crystal today, initial setup was not that bad. It was a little confusing at first as Iām not familiar with OpenXr and the pimax tool set but I got it figured out pretty fast. I used to work in IT and am pretty adept at learning software/hardware pretty fast so take what I said about setup as coming from someone who likes to tinker with Tech. The whole setup Took about 45 mins, then a further 2 hours getting the couple of Sims I wanted to play dialed in. (IL2 & MSFS).
Build Quality:
Everything looks good. Iām having a tiny bit of light bleed into the facemask though. It seems that the face mask might be warped/not flush with the housing a bit and is letting in a little light on both sides. If I press on the face gasket it goes any but comes back right when I stop applying pressure. I took two little pieces of electrical tape and just put them in the corners where this was happening. This fixed the issue but was a little disappointing, but not deal-breaking. Comfort-wise, itās okay. My skull has a pointed bump in the back, just born like that lol and the pad does start to bother me as it presses right on it. If I work it a bit I can get it pretty okay.
Image Quality:
First off Iād like to say that the image quality is far superior to the Index in every single way. The Colors are beautiful, the Screen door is completely gone and Blacks are black! I think this has been covered and is agreed upon.
FOV:
(This is where the disappointment sets inā¦)
I purchased the Pimax with the belief the FOV was going to be about the same as the Valve Index. Vertically it seems to be about the same but Horizontally⦠It feels much less. So much so that I feel like Iām wearing blinders. I donāt know if its my head shape or what. I say this because the Crystal FOV was advertised as being 110 degrees, the same as the Index. Its not, at least not the FOV I was able to get wearing my Index the way I doā¦
If you are familiar with the Valve Index, it has an adjuster where you can move the lenses closer or further from your eyes, in and out. I would use my Index with the lenses as close as possible which gave a great horizontal FOV to the point of where I could hardly see where the lenses stopped. The Crystal feels more like what the Index feels like with the Lenses adjusted all the way out, not all the way in which the Index is capable of.
I donāt know why but this is bothering me to a degree that Iām sadly thinking of returning it. While the image quality is absolutely fantastic, I feel like Iām losing Immersion to the point that it is all I can think about when Iām playing. I do realize this is a very personalized opinion, and how I wore my Index was probably not the norm.
Last thoughts⦠Iām going to give it a few more days and see if it is something I can get used to. Iāll report back with an update after I make my decision.

It has been 3 days since I received my Pimax crystal.
The good: excellent image quality, great colors, and a very light optical cable. That is all.
The bad:
- facial foams (both of them) do not fill your face; there is a big gap on both sides; moving your head around breaks your sweetspot.
-lens have visible sweetspot and is very weird, moving your head you can clearly see the difference in plane sims
- lens distortion on sides but very visible on the bottom of the lens in menus and plane sims
- ghosting on the edges when moving your head left or right
- 30-40% less fps/performance than HP G2 in plane sims with high end pc with RTX 4090. even with lowered resolution, even if i set similar resolution as HP G2 in Open XR Toolkit
- dmas is not bad, but i still think HP G2 speakers are better
- Controllers are a joke
- power hub in the package is junk
- overall build quality doesnāt justify the 1900 euro product - I leave in Europe
- you can see led light from the power button in the helmet
- Pimax Client/ Pi server eat 10-13% cpu usage and 5-10% gpu usage even on standby, even with helmet powered off.
If they donāt release eye tracking and DFR in 10 days to recover some of the performance, i will return it. I hate to be an early adopter, especially when i read now that they plan to make changes to the design to fix the problems with comfort.

So I just got my Pimax Crystal and I am absolutely loving it but the one area it was not working out in was wearing my glasses with the headset. It was very uncomfortable and I was constantly worried about scratching the lenses of either the headset or my own glasses due to the somewhat tight eyebox of the Crystal⦠So I really want to thank VR-Rock for sending these lenses out because they solved a huge issue for me!
The VR-Rock prescription lenses are really good quality and installation as you will see in this video was very easy. Now I donāt have to worry about anything scratching the glass aspheric lenses of my Pimax Crystal. VR-Rockās lenses are well designed and I love the fact they have the blue light blocking.
If you need a good set of prescription lenses for your Pimax Crystal or any other VR, AR, or XR headsets out there then I canāt recommend VR-Rock enough!
